Artist Statement

I paint depictions of ancient objects that were devotional, contemplative. Working from digital photographs my paintings are a topological record of moving across surfaces as you would move across a wetland bog: step-by-step, puzzle-like.
Both looking at and making paintings are intimate acts. When I paint, my hand on a brush, I feel a connection to the hand that first made the painting or object. Like cooking from an old recipe, I try to drag a piece of the past into the present, not by thinking about it but by performing it. It is a physical, sensual link.

emily.goodman.965 says: Very interesting concept, combining the fascination and tradition of historic art pieces with modern ideas of repetition and abstraction.
