Artist Statement

In painting I seek a particular ‘truth’. My paintings are primarily informal portraits of friends and acquaintances. By portraying compelling subjects from the new bohemian culture, I try to capture a moment of 'vulnerability' and attempt to express the truth of that moment; culminating in a kind of facsimile of personality. I employ the visual traditions of the Italian Baroque and Nineteenth Century French Academies. These stylistic approaches combine the best in realist painting. The warm palette and chiaroscuro lighting of the Italians beautifully complement the cool muted tones of the French.
