Artist Statement

I started painting after years of self-taught cartooning, illustration, silk-screening, sign making and design. At an early age, I developed a taste for pop art, cartoons, parody and satire. I went nuts for Wacky Packages (collectible stickers that lampooned various consumer products) and the early Mad comic books from the 1950s. Since my west Michigan childhood in the 1970s I’ve enjoyed riffing on, tweaking and bending images and symbols in my art. Among my major influences are Art Spiegelman, Andy Warhol, Alphonse Mucha, Peter Max, Keith Haring, John Singer Sargent, R. Crumb, William Elder, Alice Neel and Art Speigelman.
