Artist Statement

Lila Freeman paints and draws from life. She sets up still lifes using objects which she cannot bear to discard: no-longer-mendable blouses, mildewed sneakers, and out-of-circulation soda cans. Her models are friends, family members, pets, subway riders, nude models and co-workers. She is inspired by her collection of illustrated children’s books as well as the art of Édouard Vuillard, Alice Neel, and Lucian Freud. Lila’s process is fueled by the music she listens to while she works; her dream painting or drawing would give viewers the same ecstatic jolt they feel when hearing the chorus of a favorite song.
