Artist Statement

My process is not unlike the process a snail undertakes to cross a small stone path to get to the other side of a bright lawn. It is slow, unusual, and purposeful. I draw portraits of poets in drag, women of a certain age with a flair for hats, and the occasional self portrait that explores sex, self and psychoanalysis. I teach and write poetry by day, and draw by dawn. At their worst, my portraits are the best of all my days. At their best, they make me smaller.
