Artist Statement

The series “Unnamed Calamity” are meditations on the end of empire. The paper pieces are very small— this size is intended to help render an image of calamity that is all the more intense because it is so minutely concentrated. The objects have resonance as artifacts— Pompeii castaways. The panels are windows— the viewer is a witness to an unnameable event. Materials are spare— ballpoint pen drawings on gessoed substrate and turpentine washes. These reflect my interest in the poetic possibilities that landscape and abstraction offer— size and material work to confine the action and create distance evocative of loss.
