Artist Statement

No matter how far away I go, my paintings are still heavily influenced the by Smokey Mountains; where I lived most of my adolescent life. The way that life is understood in a matter-of-fact, simple and sublime way carry's over to my work. My experience with the land and with animals has been both ideal and brutal. My work dwells on moments that are both familiar and unsettling where an encounter with an animal is forced by the viewer. Painting allows me to linger with these moments, creating portraits awkward with desire.
